Hall Wood Forest is a truly unique project set in woodland just outside the busy coastal town of Looe in Cornwall. The site had been acquired by our client with planning permission for 25 single storey 2 bedroomed timber framed holiday lodges.
Our brief was to obtain planning permission for 25 units but with a revised design that created much larger 3 and 4 bedroomed luxury properties over 2 storeys. It was evident that the existing planning approval did not properly address the site conditions – namely gradient, ecology factors and the dense woodland. The solution was to elevate the dwellings on stilts so they became tree top villas that became immersed into the canopy of the trees. The layouts include large terraces and balconies – the idea is that the occupants can literally live within the trees and enjoy stunning views across the woodland valley to the sea.
The site posed considerable challenges in terms of archaeology, access, ecology, sustainability and the coordination of complex servicing requirements. We used our experience and knowledge to ensure all these factors were aligned to achieve a successful planning outcome.
