We were appointed by clients Alan and Fiona to redesign their ground floor to create a large family kitchen space plus a home office and better utility spaces.
The original house was a 1930’s large detached property located in Bramhall, typical of its era with a small cramped kitchen and limited access onto the mature gardens to the rear.
Our solution was to build an extension across the back of the house, which allowed us to open up the plan and create a beautiful light filled kitchen and dining space with smaller extensions either side for the utility/ boot room and homes office. The new extension created a visual and physical link to the garden, which has also been landscaped to maximise the enjoyment of the users.
A large flat rooflight spans across the kitchen extension ensuring daylight reaches the deepest part of the plan, and the 2.6m high sliding doors offer optimum sightlines from inside to outside. We used two types of facing brick in the extension which tone with the original brick of the house – this was a clever way of avoiding the need to find an exact match.
The crittal style internal doors are a nod to the age of the original house and create a link between the traditional style hall through to the more contemporary kitchen space. The desk in the office space has been built into a projecting bay window so the client can feel immersed in the tranquil garden.
The completed project has transformed this house into a truly functional and beautiful home.
