On this International Women's Day, we want to share with you the inspiring story of two remarkable women, Emma and Edwina, who are the brilliant minds behind Kimble Roden Architects and Designers. These women have broken barriers and overcome challenges to established themselves in the architecture and design industry.
Their inspiring journey began when they first crossed paths at Holford Associates in Manchester (now AHR). Edwina had just made history as the first qualified female architect to work there, while Emma was completing her part 1 placement. Time flew by, Emma completed her qualifications, and they both went on to work in large firms for a few years. However, the need for flexibility while raising their children led them to stop working at big practices. Despite this, their unwavering passion for architecture and design remained alive. A few years later, fate brought them together again in a primary school playground, both self-employed architects. They saw an opportunity to team up and create something special, and that's how Kimble Roden Architects and Designers was born.
Their journey was not without obstacles, particularly for Edwina starting out her career in the ‘80s when female architects were few and far between. However, she proved and established herself as a strong architect in the industry through her hard work and talent. Both have experienced prejudices along the way, but rather than let it hinder them, they have used their experiences to engender an inclusive workplace in their own practice.
It's incredible to think that it was their shared experiences as women and mothers that created Kimble Roden. They have proven that it is possible to have a successful career while raising a family and that women can excel in male-dominated industries. On this International Women's Day, we celebrate them and their contributions to the architecture industry as shining examples of accomplished women who work together and support each other.
Emma and Edwina's commitment to excellence, quality, and finesse is evident in their work. Now with over 70 years combined experience in the industry, their success story is an inspiration to all women who dream of pursuing their passion while having a family. We applaud their work and wish them continued success in their endeavors.
